youth employment programme
The Keeping it R.E.A.L Youth Employment Programme is a 12 week course delivered by Paulette Pavelich from the Upper Hutt City Council Community Development team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development.
The aim of the programme is to use a holistic approach to enable young people (aged between 18 and 24) to move into employment or further education.
Over the first 8 weeks the students explore practical skills such as CV writing, interview skills and computer skills while also engaging in a variety of useful sessions covering topics such as customer service, workplace expectations, how to dress for success, and budgeting.
Students are able to achieve a variety of certificates in a range of skills like First Aid, Site Safe, Barista training, Learners Driver’s Licences, Forklift and Wheels/Track/Rollers endorsements, and others. We also visit a number of tertiary providers, such as Weltec, Whiteria, Te Auaha and Learning Connexion to explore opportunities for further education.
We focus on the seven employability skills of positive attitude, communication, teamwork, self-management, willingness to learn, thinking skills and resilience and involve a number of local stakeholders, including businesses and community groups, in order to offer the students opportunities for volunteering and work experience.
For the last four weeks, the students move into arranged work experience placements and are offered one on one support for managing the demands of the workplace, searching for employment positions and/or registering for post-secondary education and negotiating study link.
